This is an incredibly powerful video that I encourage everyone to watch. Such an unbelievable statistic was mentioned – Madagascar currently has less than 7% of its original forests. If this video doesn’t make you want to plant a tree, I don’t know what will! 🙂

Cocaine to Blame for Rain Forest Loss, Study Says

Cocaine to Blame for Rain Forest Loss, Study SaysA Colombian soldier surveys an area deforested for the cultivation of cocaine.

A study shows that Colombian deforestation has partly been due to the cultivation of the coca crop, which is used to make the drug cocaine. In addition, the presence of coca plants are bringing in unwanted people and activities into the area. One of the world’s richest spots in terms of biodiversity is at risk as many creatures in the Colombian rainforest are now on the brink of extinction. However, it is encouraging to see that in recent years the cultivation of cocaine has dropped significantly. Our efforts must continue if we wish to save the endangered species residing in these rainforests as well as the people who call these regions of Colombia home.

Britain spends £10m to stop deforestation in Brazil

Britain spends £10m to stop deforestation in Brazil

It’s exciting to see that Britain is taking a stand against illegal logging. Hopefully this will allow the rural farmers there to stay on their land, and it will help fight negative climate change. I was especially interested in the UK’s  goal to halve deforestation by 2020. I think this is a little ambitious, but I am so proud of Britain for taking initiative and working to combat this global issue.
